Protect Your Privacy and Encourage Productivity

Imagine this: you’re laying in bed at night. The room is perfectly quiet. So quiet, in fact, that you can hear everything.

The tree branches outside your window. The footsteps of the person in the hallway. Every creek your bed makes as you shift.

It’s enough to drive a person mad.

Oddly enough, the quieter a room is, the more noises can distract you. It’s true when you’re trying to get to sleep – and it’s true during the workday.

If you’re interested in defining a workspace that encourages privacy and productivity, you’re in the market for sound masking technology. Don’t know what that is? Just keep reading for more.

What Is Sound Masking?

When you’re trying to get to sleep, it sometimes helps to put on a white noise machine. White noise helps block out those little distractions – and after a while, you don’t even notice it.

Sound masking works like a sophisticated kind of white noise, but the ambient sound is tuned to the frequency of human speech. That reduces the distance spoken sounds will travel throughout your workspace.

While it never overwhelms the listener, sound masking is designed to prevent people from overhearing conversations and to minimize the distractions they can cause.

How Does Sound Masking Work?

Sound masking creates a field of ambient noise that prevents conversations spoken at a normal volume from being overheard.

To do that, speakers are strategically placed throughout your workspace, within the ceiling. Users can control each speaker individually, raising or lowering the volume of the masking noise as needed.

In most setups, the speakers are recessed and function like normal speakers. In certain circumstances, you can hide the speakers within the walls. This “indirect” sound masking uses speaker that fire upward and reflect downward to offer full coverage of the space.

Can Sound Masking Help Increase Productivity?

Sound masking is used to increase your office’s privacy, but it can also help increase productivity by minimizing the distracting noises throughout the workday.

Whether it’s the tick of a wall clock, the sound of a coffee machine, or two co-workers standing around the water cooler talking about the latest episode of Game of Thrones, staff members will more easily tune out the sounds and focus on their work.
